Traditional Stairs in Mayfair

The requirement

To form a bespoke set of stairs for a new loft conversion to a London Townhouse, in-keeping with the existing stairs below.

The out come

A compliant and intricate traditional staircase in-keeping with the remainder of the house.

How we made it

An in-depth measured survey was taken to ensure building regulation compliance would be achieved. Due to the complexity, the design was formalised and issued to Building Control ahead of construction and approval granted. The side stringers were formed with CNC machine to ensure exact millimetre accuracy, and to provide a recess for the risers and goings to attached to. The stairs were formed from solid hard wood and the profiles of the step edges made carved with specialised equipment. The handrail was formed through a combination of steaming, caving, and standing until a seamless profile was created. The handrail and steps were lightly stained and varnished to augment the wood grain patterns. The staircase was installed as single piece with temporary steps whilst the underside was plastered. Once the majority of the work had been complete, the finished steps were added, and the carpet runner installed.
